On any given Saturday you’ll find Jubilee Park filled with laughter and cheers from the sideline as children play Netball. Grassroot sports are more than just weekend activities, they’re the foundation for healthier and happier children.

With only 6 out of 10 children aged 5-14 participating in sport outside of school, the Australian Sport Commission is determined to have more Australian children getting involved in grassroot games.

At a time when children need connection, the benefit of sport extends far beyond physical fitness. With 1 in 7 adolescents worldwide experiencing a mental illness the importance of protecting children now more than ever cannot be overstated.

Encouraging children to play sport happens at grassroot levels. With its team based structure and inclusive nature team sports such as netball create spaces where kids feel supported, valued and motivated. Research shows that teens who participate in sport clubs are 60% less likely to experience depression compared to peers. As children get involved in sport, they begin to create a sense of self worth helping to improve confidence and nurture overall growth.

Physical activity, especially at grassroots also play a biological role. Movement helps regulate the release of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals responsible for mood) which means children directly feel better when they play.

For many children, sport is where friendships and identities are formed.

Through grassroot sport, especially netball children learn how to:

·         Work as part of a team

·         Support others

·         Communicate effectively

·         Build resilience and emotional regulation

·         Improve social skills

·         Gain greater confidence

These are not only sporting skills, they are life skills. With an estimate of 181,000 children aged 9-14 participating in Netball the sport continues to be a major driver of grassroot engagement.

Sport is not only about the game its about helping our kids build friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging. It starts at grassroots. Get your kids involved in sport today.
